The field of assault prevention focuses on philosophies and actions that can deter a dangerous or violent confrontation before it ever occurs. Proponents of assault prevention rightly believe that the easiest way to reduce crime is to take steps to avoid it in the first place. The field therefore concentrates on what some would call common sense principles.

But if these axioms are so oft-repeated and understood, how come so many people continue to wantonly flout them? One major reason is the false assumption that a violent crime could never happen to that particular individual. Battery, rape, burglary, and other horrible crimes are supposed to happen elsewhere, not in safe neighborhoods and affluent regions.

Assault Prevention Stands That Notion on Its Head

The core assumption behind assault prevention is that assault can and does in fact happen everywhere. Hence, the best way to avoid it is by remaining alert and knowing what to do in the case of an attack. Walking with groups, staying in well-lit areas, and never giving sensitive information to strangers are just a few of the guiding precepts.

If you do find yourself the victim of an attack, however, prevention immediately defers to protection. The number one goal is to avoid bodily harm, no matter what the cost. Even the staunchest supporters of assault prevention realize that no situation is ever 100-percent safe. To that end, they propose the use of personal protection equipment such as security alarms and sprays to help thwart attackers.
